With the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales just around the corner (June 12–July 5), both teams are using this bilateral clash as a high-stakes dress rehearsal.

India and South Africa are placed in the same group, Group A, of the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, and are slated to meet on June 21 in Manchester. That makes every game in this series a psychological battle, not just a cricketing one. Teams will be probing weaknesses, studying tendencies, and filing away information.

South Africa were runners-up in both the 2023 and 2024 editions of the Women’s T20 World Cup, while India were finalists in the 2020 edition. For India, last year brought sweet redemption, a historic Women’s Cricket World Cup win that finally handed them their maiden senior ICC trophy. Now, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side wants to complete the set with a T20 World Cup crown.

India: In-Form and Hungry

India arrives fresh off a T20I series win over Australia. They enter the series ranked No. 3 in the ICC T20I rankings, while South Africa sits fifth.

The squad has some intriguing new faces. Anushka Sharma has earned her maiden call-up after impressing in the WPL, scoring 177 runs in seven matches for Gujarat Giants at a strike rate of 129.19. Meanwhile, Arundhati Reddy, India’s standout bowler against Australia with eight wickets from three matches, has retained her place. Notable omissions include Vaishnavi Sharma, Sneh Rana, G Kamalini, Amanjot Kaur, and Harleen Deol, signalling a clearer picture of what the management wants from their final World Cup XV.

South Africa: Home Conditions, High Stakes

The series kicks off at Kingsmead, Durban, with the first two T20Is, before shifting to Johannesburg and then concluding in Benoni on April 27. South Africa head into the series with confidence after a 3-2 T20I series win over New Zealand, a closely fought contest that showcased both emerging talent and experienced match-winners. This series also marks the first meeting between the two sides in any international format since their 2025 ICC World Cup showdown in Navi Mumbai.

Head-to-Head: India Holds the Edge

India Women lead the all-time T20I head-to-head against South Africa, winning 10 of their 19 matches between 2014 and 2024. South Africa has won six, with three matches ending in no result. Smriti Mandhana leads all run-scorers in this rivalry with 406 runs in 17 innings, while Shabnim Ismail (now retired) tops the wickets column with 17 dismissals in 14 matches.

Key Players to Watch

Smriti Mandhana (India)

The heartbeat of India’s batting line-up. In 2024, Mandhana scored 763 runs in T20Is, the most by any player in T20Is in a single calendar year. In December 2025, she became the second woman batter after Suzie Bates to reach 4,000 runs in T20Is. She currently sits second in the ICC Women’s T20I batting rankings, and her ability to dictate the tone in the powerplay will be central to India’s plans. South Africa’s pace attack on bouncy Durban tracks will be a fascinating early test.

Deepti Sharma (India)

Deepti Sharma recently reached a career milestone by becoming the world’s No. 1-ranked T20I bowler for the first time. She currently sits third in the ICC T20I bowling rankings, and her ability to strangle the middle overs with off-spin while contributing with the bat lower down makes her India’s most complete cricketer in this format. Against South Africa’s aggressive middle order, her control will be priceless.

Arundhati Reddy (India)

Coming off a Player of the Month award for February 2026, Reddy’s eight wickets against Australia in the last series cemented her status as India’s most dangerous pace bowler at present. She provides flexibility to India, consistently delivering early breakthroughs while contributing quick runs in the lower order. South Africa’s top order will need a clear plan to handle her movement with the new ball.

Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa)

The Proteas’ captain and their most reliable batter. In her T20I career, she has scored 2,326 runs from 81 innings at a strike rate of 119. Recent form backs her up; she hit an unbeaten 61 against Pakistan in a tight chase and scored 41 against New Zealand in a high-scoring game. Wolvaardt’s ability to anchor while also rotating strike against spin will be the defining factor in SA’s middle-over performances.

Nonkululeko Mlaba (South Africa)

South Africa’s most potent bowling weapon. In her T20I career, Mlaba has picked up 59 wickets from 65 innings at an economy of just 6. She tormented New Zealand in the recent series, claiming 3 for 27 in one game to break crucial partnerships. Against India’s formidable batting line-up, her ability to tie down batters while also taking wickets in the middle overs could be the difference between a competitive South Africa and a deflated one.

Kayla Reyneke (South Africa)

The 20-year-old who has taken the women’s game by storm. Reyneke scored 109 runs in her debut series, providing crucial contributions in the middle order. Wolvaardt herself praised Reyneke’s striking ability, calling it “incredibly impressive” and noting that “the raw power she has at just 20 years old is something players like me work on every day.” She also bowls off-spin usefully, a match-winner with both bat and ball if the conditions favour her.

Matchups to Look Forward To

Smriti Mandhana vs Ayabonga Khaka

Deepti Sharma vs Laura Wolvaardt

Arundhati Reddy vs Kayla Reyneke

Shafali Verma vs Nonkululeko Mlaba

This series is a selector's notebook in motion. Both camps will be finalising World Cup squads, which means fringe players face do-or-die auditions. Given that these two sides share a group in June, the tactical chess match begins in Durban on April 17. The silverware matters, but the information gathered here could matter even more come Manchester.

Should Rajat Patidar get a chance in India's T20 setup?

Every IPL season throws up a debate that refuses to go away quietly.

Tanvi Bhasker

Every IPL season throws up a debate that refuses to go away quietly. 20-ball 53 against Mumbai Indians on April 12 including five sixes. That’s not a hot streak, that’s a statement. Across 103 T20 matches, Patidar has accumulated 3,110 runs at an average of 35.34 and a strike rate of 158.59, including 28 fifties and a century.

What makes these numbers compelling isn’t just volume, it’s the manner. Destructive in the middle overs, comfortable against hard lengths from fast bowlers, and capable of taking down all kinds of spin, Patidar backs himself to play his shots from the very first ball he faces. Against CSK this season, before Patidar’s entry at No. 4, RCB had scored 93 off the first 64 balls of the match. From the time he walked in, they made an astonishing 157 off 56 balls. That is the impact of a genuine match-winner.

Patidar first announced himself during the 2022 IPL Eliminator, scoring 112 not out off 54 balls against Lucknow Super Giants, becoming the first uncapped player to score a century in the IPL playoff stage. He then led RCB to end their 18-year title drought by winning the 2025 IPL championship, earning both cricketing and leadership credibility.

He made his ODI debut against South Africa in late 2023 and a Test debut against England in Visakhapatnam followed soon after. The international blueprint exists. What’s been missing is a T20I opportunity.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" debate. India won the T20 World Cup in March 2026 with Suryakumar Yadav as captain and Tilak Varma as a key middle-order contributor. You don’t tinker with a World Cup-winning combination lightly.

But winning the World Cup didn’t paper over every flaw. India’s campaign exposed a mounting struggle against spin across the group phase, their batters faced 42 overs of off-spin, scoring 315 runs at a run-rate hovering just above seven while losing 15 wickets. The inability to rotate strike consistently or accelerate through the middle overs allowed even Associate Nations to push India closer than expected.

When the knockout rounds arrived, the cracks became craters. In their 76-run thrashing by South Africa in the Super 8s, India’s historic mastery of spin was replaced by a glaring vulnerability. The primary issue lay in India’s left-heavy top order, featuring Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma. India had even played three left-hand batters in the middle order in the bilateral series against South Africa earlier in the season, specifically to delay the use of Keshav Maharaj and none of them got going. A tactical workaround that ultimately underlined the structural problem rather than fixing it.

Suryakumar Yadav’s own form has been a concern, while players like Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, and Axar Patel have struggled to maintain consistency against spin in the middle overs. The World Cup was won, yes but India’s spin problem is a bill that keeps arriving.

</line>

This is precisely where the Patidar argument stops being just a fan debate and starts being a legitimate selection conversation.

Since his IPL debut, Patidar has maintained a strike rate of 175.24 against spin bowlers, while averaging 60.55 against them. In IPL 2024 alone, his strike rate against spin was a jaw-dropping 224.69. He smashed 182 runs in just 81 balls against spinners, with 20 sixes, the joint-most by any batter in the tournament and was dismissed by spin only twice all season.

The method behind these numbers isn’t brute force it’s craftsmanship. Patidar is comfortable against hard lengths from fast bowlers, capable of taking down all kinds of spin, and backs himself to play his shots as soon as he comes to the crease. He uses his feet, hits against the turn, and crucially plays very few dot balls against spinners. He played only 18 dot balls against spin across the entire 2024 IPL season. In a format where dot balls against spin in the middle overs are what kill innings, that discipline is as valuable as the strike rate.

In IPL 2026, nothing has changed. He is striking at over 213.46 this season , and is making the kind of case that selectors cannot comfortably ignore even when they want to.

The irony is almost poetic. India spent their T20 World Cup campaign worrying about a left-heavy middle order being pinned down by off-spin. Waiting in the wings was a right-handed batter who averages over 60 against spin and hits it at a strike rate north of 175 and he wasn’t even in the squad.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" role in Shreyas Iyer and Riyan Parag both younger and also captaining their IPL teams. Iyer, in particular, has been equally ferocious: scoring 137 runs at a strike rate of 187.67 in four IPL 2026 games after being left out of the World Cup squad entirely.Shreyas Iyer is also striking over 200 against spin bowlers this season, which is the specific skill India will need most when the home series cycle against turning tracks begins later in the year.

The honest answer is that Patidar deserves a T20I opportunity and India’s documented spin struggles give that case a sharpness it previously lacked. This isn’t just a feel-good story about a franchise player being rewarded for IPL brilliance. It’s about a team that went through a World Cup visibly uncomfortable against the ball that turns, and a batter who has spent years mastering exactly that.

Whether he gets the nod over Iyer, Parag, or an in-form Tilak Varma remains the selection puzzle. But selectors who watched India get tied down by off-spin through a World Cup campaign, and then watch Patidar take spinners apart over after over in an IPL, will find the question harder and harder to dodge. The IPL isn’t done yet. By the time it finishes, the case will only have grown louder.

Data From ESPNcricinfo, IPL and CricTracker

Thanks for reading Pavilion Voice! Although Allen departed in the 6th over caught by Shardul Thakur’s bowling, he had already set an aggressive tone.

Ajinkya Rahane was the anchor of KKR’s innings, contributing a composed 67 off 40 balls and stitching crucial partnerships across the innings. Youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi exploded at the death, hammering 51 off 29 balls (SR 175.86) with 6 fours and 2 sixes, adding vital impetus in the final five overs alongside Rinku Singh (33 off 21 balls).

KKR's 220/4 was built on the back of Rahane's composure at the top and Raghuvanshi's breathtaking late assault, a combination that looked unassailable, until MI's openers had other ideas.

MI Bowling in KKR’s Innings: Shardul Thakur Stars with 3 Wickets

For Mumbai Indians, Shardul Thakur was the standout bowler, picking up 3 crucial wickets for 39 runs across his 4 overs, including the prized scalps of both openers. Jasprit Bumrah was economical (35 runs off 4 overs) but went wicketless, while Hardik Pandya contributed 1/39. Ghazanfar bowled 4 overs for 51 runs without reward.

MI Innings: Rohit & Rickelton’s 148-Run Stand Seals the Deal

Mumbai Indians’ run chase was nothing short of spectacular. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton walked out in the powerplay and never looked in trouble. The partnership was worth 148 runs off just 72 balls, an astonishing rate that reduced the equation to a mere formality by the halfway mark of MI’s innings.

Rohit Sharma cracked 78 off 38 balls, featuring 6 fours and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 205.26. He finally fell in the 12th over, but by then, the game was as good as over. Rickelton, the South African strokemaker, was even more devastating. His 81 off 43 balls (8 sixes, 4 fours, SR 188.37) was an innings of exceptional quality. He was eventually run out in the 16th over but had already done all the damage required.

Suryakumar Yadav (16 off 8) and Tilak Varma (20 off 14) kept the chase ticking in the middle overs, before Hardik Pandya finished it off with a boundary in the final over. MI won with 5 balls to spare.

KKR Bowling: Sunil Narine Picks Up a Wicket, Rest Struggle

KKR’s bowlers were put to the sword by MI’s explosive openers. Vaibhav Arora conceded 52 runs in 4 overs (1 wicket), and Varun Chakravarthy went wicketless in 4 overs for 48. Even the experienced Sunil Narine, who ended with 1/30 in 3 overs, was largely ineffective against Rickelton’s power-hitting. Kartik Tyagi picked up 1 wicket but bled 43 runs in 4 overs.

Standout Player Performances: MI vs KKR IPL 2026

Rohit Sharma — 78 (38 balls) | SR 205.26

The MI captain was in his element at the Wankhede. Rohit played with characteristic authority, picking his balls to attack from ball one. His six-hitting was exceptional — 6 maximums in 38 balls — and he had the game firmly in MI’s control before his dismissal in the 12th over.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Ryan Rickelton — 81 (43 balls) | SR 188.37 | 8 Sixes

The most impactful innings of the match came from Ryan Rickelton. This was a comprehensive victory that underscores MI’s batting depth and the match-winning opening partnership that Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton are developing.

For KKR, the bowling unit will need serious attention going forward. Conceding 224/4 in 19.1 overs, largely to an opening pair, is a worrying sign. Their bowling lacked the express pace and variation needed to challenge MI on a flat Wankhede surface.

MI march on with two wins in the early stages of IPL 2026, and look like serious contenders. His controlled lengths prevented easy boundary options, forcing SRH to rebuild instead of dominating the first six overs. Reuters reported Duffy finished with 3 for 22, including crucial wickets of top-order batters that stopped SRH from fully capitalizing on the batting-friendly surface.

Fielding Support Increased Pressure

RCB’s fielding added equal value during this phase. Phil Salt took three sharp catches, and those moments ensured every half-chance was converted. Quick movement inside the circle also reduced singles, which increased scoreboard pressure on SRH’s middle order. This combination of wicket-taking and tight fielding became the first clear turning point because SRH lost momentum just when they usually accelerate

Ishan Kishan Held the SRH Innings Together

Captain’s Knock Under Pressure

Ishan Kishan played the most important innings for SRH, scoring aggressively when wickets were falling around him. His intent helped SRH cross the 200-run mark, which initially looked like a competitive total.

Why This Knock Matters for SRH in IPL 2026

A captain’s innings in the first match often sets tone for the season, and Kishan’s attacking approach showed SRH can still post strong totals even after early setbacks.

Aniket Verma Added Valuable Middle-Order Momentum

Aniket Verma’s contribution in the middle overs gave SRH crucial acceleration. His timely boundaries supported Kishan and helped SRH cross the 200-run mark, which initially looked like a strong first-innings total.

RCB Batters Controlled the Chase with Authority

Kohli’s Experience in Big Chases

Virat Kohli paced the innings with control and timing rather than risk. He absorbed pressure early and accelerated once the chase entered a comfortable phase.

Padikkal Added Match-Winning Momentum

Devdutt Padikkal’s quick scoring changed the pace of the chase. His aggressive middle-over hitting ensured RCB never allowed SRH bowlers to settle. Together, the partnership removed scoreboard pressure quickly.

Rajat Patidar Added Finishing Momentum

Rajat Patidar played an important supporting role in the later phase of the innings. His quick boundaries maintained momentum and helped RCB finish the chase comfortably.

Why RCB Look Strong in IPL 2026

Balanced Squad Depth Already Visible

RCB looked complete in all departments:

early wicket-taking bowlers

aggressive middle-order support

experienced chase control

Defending Champions Show Tactical Confidence

RCB looked like a team playing with clarity rather than panic, which often separates defending champions from inconsistent sides. Even while chasing more than 200, their batting approach remained structured: early intent, controlled middle overs, and acceleration only when required. Virat Kohli anchored the innings while allowing stroke-makers around him to attack freely, showing a clear tactical plan rather than individual improvisation.

Why This Matters for IPL 2026

The biggest positive for RCB was how naturally they handled pressure. Chasing 202 in just 15.4 overs reflects confidence in both batting depth and match awareness. As defending champions, teams often face extra expectations, but RCB looked prepared for that responsibility. Their decision-making in bowling changes, field placements, and batting tempo suggested a side that understands how to control momentum across phases of the match. This tactical calm could become one of RCB’s strongest advantages in IPL 2026.

SRH Concerns After the Opening Match

Bowling Balance Still Under Question

SRH posted 201, which is usually competitive at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, but their bowling lacked control once RCB began accelerating. The attack struggled to defend lengths consistently, especially after the powerplay, allowing boundaries too frequently in the middle overs. Without sustained pressure from both ends, even a strong total started looking below par.

Why SRH Need Better Bowling Structure

The main concern is balance rather than talent. SRH need one bowler who can control pace through the middle overs and another reliable death-over option. Once RCB crossed the tenth over, SRH could not break partnerships at the right time, which made the chase one-sided despite a strong first-innings total. If this continues, SRH may score heavily in many games but still struggle to defend winning positions.

Thanks for reading Pavilion Voice! they’ve been persistent.

From the start of 2025:

Nathan Ellis: 8 powerplay wickets at 15.5, economy 8.26
(Three of those wickets came in the win over Ireland.)

Ben Dwarshuis: 8 wickets at 26.57, economy 8.08
(Dropped after failing to take a wicket vs Zimbabwe.)

Xavier Bartlett & Marcus Stoinis:
3 and 1 powerplay wickets respectively in the last 11 T20Is.
Both averaging over 50 and conceding more than 9 rpo.

Sean Abbott: 1 for 102 in his last 7 T20Is, economy 10.2.

Even Australia’s two premier T20 bowlers — Ellis and Adam Zampa — went wicketless across the losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

This isn’t an isolated dip. It’s been the defining flaw across multiple ICC tournaments:

2022: Devon Conway and Finn Allen dismantled the new-ball attack.

2024: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, and Rohit Sharma tore into the “big three” to the extent that Mitchell Starc was dropped in both tournaments.

When a team repeatedly loses games in the first six overs, it’s no longer a coincidence. It becomes structural.

Sri Lanka & Zimbabwe: Same Pattern, Different Script

vs Sri Lanka

Australia began strongly, 104 after 8.3 overs.
Josh Inglis and Glenn Maxwell powered them to 160/4 in 16 overs with Stoinis and Connolly still in hand.

Then came the collapse: 21/6 in the last 24 balls.

While defending, Sri Lanka were 77 runs needed off 46 after losing their second wicket. Then came an 80-run partnership off 34 balls between Nissanka and Rathnayake. The target was chased with two overs to spare.

vs Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe game exposed deeper tactical issues.

Bowling comparison:

Australia

Avg speed: 91.7 kph

Avg spin/seam movement: 1.9

Zimbabwe

Avg speed: 87.8 kph

Avg spin/seam movement: 2.8

Zimbabwe bowled slower but extracted significantly more movement. On a surface offering grip and deviation, they adapted better. Australia bowled quicker but flatter, allowing batters to line them up.

Tactically, it was puzzling.

Zimbabwe had two left-handers at the crease — Marumani and Burl — yet Maxwell bowled just one over. On a turning surface against two lefties, that underutilisation stood out.

Australia also struggled with a wicket-taking threat. Against Zimbabwe, the bowling group managed just two wickets. Across the two losses combined, Ellis and Zampa went wicketless.

It wasn’t just execution; it was a failure to read conditions and respond accordingly.

Across both defeats (Zimbabwe & Sri Lanka), Australia managed just four wickets combined — three to Stoinis and one to Green. Their frontline strike options failed to make an impact.

Spin & Tactical Misreads

Australia were beaten by spin against Sri Lanka.

Yet, on a surface where Sri Lanka bowled 14 overs of spin to Australia’s nine, Australia opted for batting depth over a second specialist spinner.

Connolly, who averages 6.75 in his last 15 T20 innings and has fallen to spin eight times in that stretch, was preferred at No. 8 over Matt Kuhnemann.

It reflected a blind faith in Plan A, power-hitting, rather than adapting to conditions.

The Hazlewood Factor

Australia badly missed Hazlewood.

Before his hamstring injury (Nov 12), he had taken 8 powerplay wickets in 7 T20Is at an average of 15.12 and economy of 6.72.

In his last T20I, he returned 3/13 against India at the MCG — dismissing Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma.

Since that injury, Australia has lost 7 of 8 T20Is (the lone win coming against Ireland).

The drop-off has been stark.

Batting: Form, Fitness & False Faith

The late call-up of Smith highlighted a deeper issue with the form and fitness of the T20I batters. Selectors gambled by starting the tournament with only 12–13 fit players, despite the option of adding Smith earlier. The gamble backfired. Smith ultimately didn’t play against Sri Lanka. Renshaw, their best batter in the first two games, was dropped.

Meanwhile:

Head’s 50 vs Sri Lanka was his first score above 31 in 13 T20I innings.
In the previous 12 innings, he averaged 12.83 at a strike rate of 125.

Inglis, Green, and Maxwell have played 37 innings across formats since the Ashes, with zero half-centuries and only one 40+ score combined.

Green wasn’t trusted with the ball vs Sri Lanka.

Maxwell hasn’t bowled more than two overs in his last six T20Is and hasn’t taken a wicket in that period.

Tim David’s move to No. 4 was meant to be the centrepiece of the batting plan. But a second hamstring injury in nine months meant he was underprepared and rusty when he finally returned.

Selection Calls That Need Owning

Smith was called in late to replace Hazlewood, not with a like-for-like bowler, but as a spare non-bowling opening batter. Then he didn’t play.

Renshaw was dropped.

Connolly was preferred despite form concerns.

These are decisions the selectors will have to own.

They backed power-hitters on blind faith, ignoring obvious warning signs in form and preparation.

Conclusion: A Structural Reset Required

Australia’s issues are layered:

Long-standing powerplay bowling weakness.

Over-reliance on power-hitting without adaptability.

Selection gambles driven by faith rather than form.

Poor injury management and squad planning.

A broader lack of T20-specific strategic focus.

This isn’t about one bad tournament.

It’s about a system that hasn’t evolved with the format.

Until Australia solves its new-ball problem, aligns selections with conditions, and treats T20 cricket as a discipline, not an afterthought, the pattern is unlikely to change.

And in T20, six overs are often enough to decide everything.

India vs. Pakistan: Is the "Greatest Rivalry" Officially Dead?

Yesterday’s match at the R. just win; they dominated from the first ball to the last. Here are the four moments that defined the game:

The Ishan Kishan Masterclass: After an early wicket, Ishan Kishan took charge. He smashed 77 runs off just 40 balls. While other batters struggled with the pitch, he made it look like a highway.

A Tactical Gamble: Pakistan tried something radical; they bowled 18 overs of spin. While it slowed India down briefly, India’s depth was too much, pushing the total to a solid 175/7.

The Early Collapse: Pakistan’s chase was over before it started. Hardik Pandya bowled a wicket-maiden, and Jasprit Bumrah followed up with two wickets in one over. At 13/3, the stadium went quiet.

Total Bowling Dominance: India used seven different bowlers. Every single one of them looked disciplined, eventually bowling Pakistan out for a measly 114 runs.

<a class="image-link image2 The broadcasters call it the "Greatest Rivalry in Sports." But let’s be real for a second: Is it actually a rivalry if one team always wins?

Thanks for reading Pavilion Voice! The One-Sided Record

A rivalry needs back-and-forth drama. It needs “last-ball thrillers.” But India has now won 8 out of the last 9 T20 World Cup games against Pakistan. Yesterday wasn’t a battle; it was a clinical training session for India.

2. The Skill Gap

India’s “bench strength” is scary. Even when their top stars fail, someone like Rinku Singh or Axar Patel steps up. Pakistan, on the other hand, seems to rely on hope. When their openers fail, the whole house of cards falls.

3. Manufactured Hype

We are living off the memories of the 1990s. Today, the “heat” between these teams exists mostly on social media and TV commercials. On the field, India has simply outgrown this fixture. If we want to see India truly tested, we look at matches against Australia or England. Those are the real battles now.

My Verdict

Yesterday proved that India is in a league of its own. This matchup still gives us the adrenaline rush we love, but it’s no longer the rivalry we think it is. We tune in hoping for a miracle, but we leave seeing the same result.

What do you think? Are you still excited for this matchup, or are you tired of the one-sided results? Let me know in the comments!
<p class="button-wrapper" Just a week ago, Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana led RCB to their second WPL trophy in a record-breaking chase against Jemimah Rodrigues’s Delhi Capitals. The squad has swapped the humid turners of India for the fast, bouncy strips of Australia.

While there have been a few international returns to the Indian side, some names have consistently featured on the ‘players to watch’ list.

Smriti Mandhana, the Queen of Indian Cricket, is in the form of her life. She was the leading run-getter in women’s ODI cricket in 2025, finishing with 1,362 runs. Mandhana capped a record-breaking year with 1,703 international runs across formats. She became just the fourth woman to complete 10,000 international runs and the youngest to do so.

She began the year by becoming the first Indian to win the Orange Cap in the WPL, scoring 377 runs in the tournament.

The elegant left-hander’s form could once again become Australia’s biggest headache in this series.

The fearless captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, finished the WPL as the second-highest run-getter with 342 runs. Her knack for delivering against Australia is no longer a coincidence. Alongside her, India’s new hero, Jemimah Rodrigues, is another batter Australia won’t want at the crease for long. Rodrigues played a pivotal role in ending Australia’s reign in the 2025 World Cup.

Australia will come hard, but this Indian middle order has shown it does not crumble under pressure.

After 14 months on the sidelines, Shreyanka Patil is finally back in Indian colours. Injuries may have paused her journey, but they haven’t dimmed her spark. She announced her return in style during the WPL, picking up a maiden T20 five-wicket haul and finishing with 11 wickets.

The young off-spinner brings energy to the middle overs, a phase Australia usually dominates. If she bowls with the same fearless belief she showed on her comeback, the Aussies might find that familiar dominance slipping away.

Renuka Singh Thakur, Deepti Sharma, and Richa Ghosh form the spine of this Indian side across formats. Renuka’s control and movement with the new ball make her India’s biggest threat in the powerplay. In Australian conditions, where swing on offer can be decisive, her ability to strike early has the potential to change the course of the game within the first few overs.

Deepti, as always, provides balance and controls the middle overs with her calm accuracy while adding crucial depth with the bat.

And then there’s Richa Ghosh, India’s fearless finisher, whose power-hitting can change games in a matter of overs. Together, they offer control, composure, and explosive impact, a combination India will rely on heavily Down Under.

The Hosts are ready for revenge.

Even without the crown, Australia remains stacked with match-winners. Under new captain Sophie Molineux, they step onto the field with one objective: to reclaim authority.

A fresh era dawns for Australia, with Sophie Molineux stepping into the leadership role. The left-arm spinner brings grit, intensity, and a competitive edge, qualities that mirror Australia’s traditional identity. Leading at home, Molineux will be eager to prove that the transition of power does not mean a drop in standards.

Ashleigh Gardner remains the heartbeat of this side, a genuine match-winner who can shift momentum with bat or ball. Beth Mooney’s composure at the top continues to anchor Australia in white-ball cricket, while Ellyse Perry’s experience and big-match temperament make her indispensable across formats. With the ball, Megan Schutt’s accuracy and swing in Australian conditions could once again test India’s top order early.

Australia may have a new captain, but the firepower in that dressing room remains very real.

An opportunity for the new champions to rule on Australian soil

This series will be decided by who brings their A+ game because when champions collide, an A game simply isn’t enough.

India may no longer be the underdogs, but Australia remains the benchmark in this rivalry. And in contests this tight, it is the team that seizes those 1% moments that ultimately emerges victorious.

Thanks for reading Pavilion Voice!
